Probiotics For Fighting Cancer

That's right--studies are showing probiotics help to prevent the dreaded "C" word...and helps fight it if you or your animal have it. Over the last 30 years, several studies have shown that probiotic bacteria have anticarcinogen (anti-cancer) properties and are capable of inhibiting tumor growth.

The nitrites used in the processing of foods (such as bologna, salami, pepperoni, hot dogs, corned beef,
pastrami, bacon and cured ham) are converted to carcinogens (cancer causers) by certain enzymes in your intestinal tract. But Lactobacillus acidophilus strains can "eat" these nitrites and help deplete their numbers.
 
Plus L. acidophilus can also favorably change your intestinal environment and reduce the supply of enzymes
that convert the nitrites to carcinogens.  This helps reduce the potential of nitrites converting to carcinogens and can help eventually lower the risk of colon cancer.

One of several effective cancer fighters is Lactobacillus bulgaricus. In his book published in 1982, Bulgarian physician Ivan Bogdanov discussed a study he conducted where he treated 100 cancer patients with L. bulgaricus.  The patients suffered from all different types of cancers. Bogdanov reported that although the results varied among the patients, they ranged from partial remissions to total cures.

In another study, the strains Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Lactobacillus casei were shown to effectively slow the growth of sarcoma 180 and Ehrlich carcinoma, two types of tumors.

Yet another study was conducted with rats where extracts of probiotics were taken from the cell walls of healthy
rats and infused into rats that had various tumors. What resulted was a marked (20% or more) reduction in the tumor sizes and growth in the diseased rats.
